The Manchester and Salford Ramblers have re-launched a pioneering initiative which aims to get more people out in the open air.
First established in 2012, the Manchester Green Trail – which features a network of 15 routes connecting parks, green spaces, waterways and quiet streets – was designed to increase the number of residents and visitors exploring Manchester and Salford’s parks, woodlands and open spaces.
In addition, it was designed to encourage healthier lifestyles, reduce car usage, and make walking in the city-centre more accessible.
Now, thanks to a partnership project between The Ramblers, Manchester City Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and Manchester Active, the circuit has enjoyed a significant upgrade.
To support the revamped trail, a series of new maps, banners and posters are being distributed – along with a QR code – to help people find their nearest route.
PDFs of each of the 15 walks are also now available to download Manchester and Salford Ramblers website.
Commenting on the trail’s relaunch, a spokesperson for the Manchester and Salford Ramblers, said: “The Ramblers, as Britain’s walking charity, is committed to extending the joys of walking – not just in the countryside but in our cities and urban areas too.
“You can get out into nature in Manchester’s Parks and other green spaces, as well as alongside our canals and rivers. The Manchester Green Trail help you discover the routes near where you live so you do not have to go far.”
Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods at Manchester City Council, said: “In a city as big as Manchester, finding areas of green space can be incredibly important for our overall wellbeing. The relaunch of our rambling trails with new and improved maps and information will be very beneficial for people who want to get out and about, and perhaps discover some of Manchester’s hidden gems.”
